TIFFIN, Ohio — Heidelberg University swept an Ohio Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Marietta College Friday (April 15) afternoon winning game one, 8-3, and game two, 6-2. The Pioneers move to 11-15 overall and 5-5 in the OAC. Heidelberg improves to 16-12 on the season and 5-17 in the OAC.
Heidelberg broke open game one with a six-run fourth inning. With the score tied 1-1, Heidelberg started the fourth with a single and a double chasing Marietta starting pitcher,
Amelia Timko (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick), from the game.
Jillian Middleton (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) took over in the circle and struggled with her control. Three walks, a hit by pitch and an error led to six Berg runs and a 7-1 lead. Heidelberg added an insurance run in the sixth.
Marietta tried to rally in the top of the seventh scoring two runs before Heidelberg shut the door.
Kylie Daugherty (Newport, Ohio/Frontier) plated the first run with a sac fly and Middleton drove in the second with an RBI single.
Timko (2-7) took the loss giving up three runs on five hits in three innings. Middleton was charged with four runs, two earned, without getting an out and
Ashton Helmke (Defiance, Ohio/Tinora) threw the final three innings and gave up one run on two hits.
Caitlin Dems (5-4) went the distance in the circle for Heidelberg. She gave up three runs, all unearned, on eight hits with one walk and two strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Daugherty and
Taylor Watts (Galloway, Ohio/West Jefferson) each had two hits for the Pioneers.
Once again, the bottom of the fourth inning proved costly for the Pioneers as Heidelberg broke a 2-2 tie with four runs in the frame in game two.
Marietta got on the board in the first inning when Daugherty led off with a single. Walks to Watts and
Emma Burke (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) loaded the bases.
Jess Brown (Brookville, Ohio/Brookville) grounded into a double play allowing Daugherty to score the game's first run.
Heidelberg evened the score with a pair of doubles in the bottom of the second inning. The Pioneers responded in the top of the third retaking the lead when Daugherty reached on a single and scored on a double from Brown.
The Student Princes tied the game with one run in the third and then plated four in the fourth for a 6-2 lead. Kat Brady had a two-run single, and Gabbie Stallbaum followed with a two-run home run.
