MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College men's lacrosse team was defeated by John Carroll University, 13-7 on Saturday (March 26) afternoon. With the win the Blue Streaks improve to 7-1 on the season, and with the loss the Pioneers are now 2-6 overall.
Three minutes into the contest, John Carroll scored the first goal when Ian Flynn found the net and scored unassisted. Marietta answered five minutes later when
Eren Evensen (Medina, Ohio/Medina) got the score, assisted by
Jackson McGill (New Market, Md./Oakdale). The Pioneers scored again quickly with a goal by
Zach Radcliffe (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park). The Blue Streaks tied it back up with 2:46 remaining as Flynn scored again. The two teams were knotted up at two after one period.
Although he gave up a quick goal to begin the second period,
Dane Barker (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) had a great period. He made seven saves during a period where he was barraged with shots on goal. That would be the only second period goal he would give up. The Pioneers tied it up with 3:43 remaining when
Chase Franklin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) scored off of a
Chase Mullen (Cabot, Pa./Knoch) assist. The score at intermission was tied up at three.
The Blue Streaks were able to take control with four goals scored in the third period. Matt Berdysiak, John Carroll's leading scorer on the season, scored a little over two minutes into the quarter. Morgan Morrell would then score in the next minute. Kevin Hack would score at the three-minute mark and Morrell would tack on another quick goal and the Pioneers would find themselves with a four-goal deficit going into the final period.
John Carroll extended the lead further into the fourth quarter. Berdysiak and Flynn (twice) would score to make the lead 10-3.
Alex Nazarczyk (Greenwood, S.C./Corning-Painted Post) would finally stop the momentum with a goal at the 12-minute mark. Mullen and Evensen would score to chip into the lead a bit further but it would not be enough and the Pioneers fell to defeat in their Ohio Athletic Conference opener.
Dane Barker (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) played all 60 minutes in goal for Marietta, he faced 44 shots, 31 of which were on goal, and made 18 saves.
Evensen and Radcliffe led the Pioneers with the two scores apiece.
Nathan Grover (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) was 13-22 on the face off for the afternoon.
The Pioneers will return to the field Wednesday (March 30) when they travel to take on the University of Mount Union, with the game scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
