No. 2 Baseball concludes Florida trip with victory over No. 8 Webster

PORT CHARLOTTE, Florida — No. 2 ranked Marietta College gave the ball to Brett Carson (Ashville, Ohio/Teays Valley) in the Pioneers' final game of the Florida trip and the senior responded by throwing six strong innings, striking out five while giving up five hits. The Pioneers knocked off their second highly ranked opponent in two days, defeating No. 8 Webster University, 3-1, Saturday (March 12) afternoon.

The Etta Express improves to 9-2 overall and Webster drops to 5-2 on the season.

The Pioneers sent four pitchers to the bump on the afternoon. Kail Hill (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) came into pitch the seventh and hit a batter and gave up a hit. Isaac Danford (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) came in and shut the door, striking out two Gorlocks. Zack Marzetz pitched the final two innings and retired all six batters he faced to earn his first save of the season.

Marietta got on the board in the first inning when Turner Hill (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Damian Yenzi (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) singled Hill home and the Pioneers were in the lead. Webster tied it up the fourth when Ben Swords singled up the middle and eventually came home on a Brandon Martinez infield single.

Marietta answered back in the fourth inning with some small ball. Zach Boyd (Kent, Ohio/Tallmadge) singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second again on a wild pitch. He was able to slide into third after Alex Page (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) flew out deep to right field and scored on an Alex Richter (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) ground out. The Pioneers tacked on an insurance run in the eighth with Boyd driving in Yenzi on a ground out.

Yenzi finished 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Hill and Logan Vietmeier (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) both finished 2-for-4.

Marietta returns home and is scheduled to play Washington and Jefferson College at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday (March 16).
