Softball splits on final day in Florida

CLERMONT, Florida — The Marietta College softball team split a pair of games Friday (March 11) to close out its spring trip to Florida. The Pioneers lost to Marian University, 3-0, and then beat Misericordia University, 7-4.

The Pioneers head north with a 5-5 overall record. Marian improves to 4-4 on the season, while Misericordia slips to 6-3 on the season.

Marian scored a run in the second, fifth and sixth innings. Evelynn Spaeth led off the second inning with a double and then scored on an error. Katelyn Matenaer had an RBI double in the fifth, while Kerena Wood had an RBI single in the sixth.

Emalee Depa (3-2) went the distance in the circle for Marian. She allowed just two hits in the shutout, walked two and struck out three.

Amelia Timko (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) (0-3) started for Marietta and took the loss. She allowed three runs on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Against Misericordia, the Pioneers scored three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to grab a 5-4 lead.

Jillian Middleton (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) had an RBI single to plate the Pioneers' first run. Anna Swierczewski (Natrona Heights, Pa./Saint Joseph) ripped a two-run double. In the sixth, Rachel Kazmirski (Colliers, W.Va./Brooke) plated a run with a triple, while Jess Brown (Brookville, Ohio/Brookville) drove in one with a single.

Marietta added a couple of insurance runs in the seventh inning. Middleton drove in a run with a sac fly, while Kylie Daugherty (Newport, Ohio/Frontier) scored on a passed ball.

Middleton (5-1) picked up the win throwing 6.1 innings and allowing four runs on 10 hits. She walked eight and struck out five. Timko pitched the final 0.2 innings to earn the save.

Miranda Bohn (2-2) took the loss. She gave up five runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. Emily Wenner allowed two runs on three hits in 2.2 innings.

Kazmirski, Middleton and Emma Birke each had two hits for the Pioneers.

Marietta returns home to host Bethany College on Sunday (March 20). The first game is set to start at 1 p.m.
