No. 9 John Carroll tops Women's Basketball

MARIETTA, Ohio — No. 9 ranked John Carroll University avenged and early season loss to Marietta College with an 83-67 victory Saturday (Feb. 5) afternoon in Ban Johnson Arena. The Pioneers fall to 17-4 on the season and 10-4 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. John Carroll improves to 17-2 overall and 12-1 in conference games.

"We had good effort today but had too many turnovers to beat a really good team," Marietta head coach Kole Vivian said. "The second quarter and the start of the fourth quarter we just couldn't convert any scoring chances."

Following a basket by JCU's Olivia Nagy to open the scoring, Marietta grabbed the early lead with a 9-0 run in the first three minutes of the game. The Pioneers held the lead until the final two minutes of the quarter.

John Carroll scored the final seven points of the period, including a three-pointer from Hannah Bouchy as time ran out, to take a 17-16 advantage into the second quarter.

A three-pointer from Jill Congrove (Circleville, Ohio/Logan Elm) and a layup from Mazenzie Wilson made it 24-23 in favor of the Pioneers with 6:05 left in the first half. Wilson's bucket was the last for Marietta in the quarter as MC missed its next 12 shots and trailed 36-24 at halftime.

The Blue Streaks pushed their lead to as many as 17 points in the third quarter. Marietta responded with a 9-0 run to close the period cutting the deficit to nine, 63-54, heading into the fourth quarter.

John Carroll scored first in the final period pushing the lead into double digits where it would stay for the remainder of the game. A jumper from Gabrielle Gevaudan with 1:46 left in the game gave the Blue Streaks their biggest lead of the game, 83-62.

Erin Hahn (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville) led Marietta with 13 points and nine rebounds. Olivia Gribble (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) finished 11 points and four boards, while Devin Hefner (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg South) chipped in with 10 points.

Gevaudan scored a game-high 17 points to lead six Blue Streaks in double figures. Kaelyn Underwood had 14 points and six rebounds, Olivia Nagy added 14 points and six boards, while Nicole Heffington notched a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Abby Adler and Sarah Balfour finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Marietta closes out the home portion of its schedule on Wednesday (Feb. 16) with a 7 p.m. game against Mount Union.
