MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Marietta College men's lacrosse team traveled to Allegheny College for a road contest and was bitten by the Gators, losing 11-8 on Saturday (Feb. 26) afternoon. With the win Allegheny improves to 1-0 overall and the loss drops the Pioneers to 1-3.
Allegheny struck first at the 10:32 mark of the first period as CT Graniel shot one past the Pioneers
Dane Barker (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day). The Gators then scored again seven minutes later when Aiden D'Amato scored an unassisted goal to put Allegheny up 2-0 after one period. Marietta remained without a goal for the next 15 minutes, but Allegheny ran off another five goals. The score at halftime was 7-0, in favor of the home team.
Marietta started to come back quickly in the third period when
Chase Franklin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) finally put the Pioneers on the board. Allegheny answered back four minutes later.
Connor Ficke (Saint Leonard, Md./Calvert) and
Quinn Rundgren (Angier, N.C./Fuquay Varina) scored in the latter half of the period, but Marietta still had a seven-goal deficit going into the final quarter. The Pioneers put up five goals in the 4th quarter. Ficke and Franklin both scored their second goals of the match and
Jackson McGill (New Market, Md./Oakdale),
Zach Radcliffe (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), and
Eren Evensen (Medina, Ohio/Medina) were able to put one in the net. The expanse was still too wide, and the Pioneers fell to defeat.
Barker played all 60 minutes in the net, he faced 34 shots, 20 of which were on goal, and made nine saves in the game.
Ficke picked up seven groundballs to go with his two goals. Frankin added an assist to his two goals on the afternoon.
Blake Chisholm (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon McMillan) and
Nate Neal (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) both caused two turnovers.
Nathan Grover (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) played well on the face-off, he won 15-23 face-offs taken.
Marietta will be back in action Wednesday (March 9) when they travel to Fayetteville, NC and take on Methodist University, with the game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
