Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer dominates Heidelberg in 8-0 victory

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College scored early and often, and the Pioneers defeated Heidelberg University, 8-0, Saturday (Oct. 22) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference men's soccer action. The Pioneers improve to 5-8-3 overall and 3-4 in the OAC, while Heidelberg falls to 0-15-1 overall and 0-7 in the OAC.

"This was a much-needed result for the boys," Marietta head coach Joe Bergin said. "It was nice to be able to celebrate our seniors with a win. I am hopeful we can use this win as a springboard for what is a huge week ahead."

The Pioneers snapped a four-game losing skid with their largest offensive output in seven years. The eight goals against Heidelberg were the most for Marietta since beating La Roche, 9-0, in 2015.

Marietta wasted little time grabbing the lead as Jacob Roberto (Berea, Ohio/Berea-Midpark) found the back of the net in the sixth minute of the match. Taj Haidar (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Southview) picked up the first of three assists in the match on the Roberto goal.

Ben Teasdale (Yorkshire, United Kingdom/Lady Lumleys) scored with an assist from Jovonni Auddino (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville North) in the 18th minute. Gavin Chappel (Oakdale, Pa./West Allegheny) assisted on a goal by Haidar in the 22nd minute and then Haidar assisted on a goal from Elliot Britton (High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire/John Hampden Grammar) in the 28th minute giving the Pioneers a 4-0 lead at halftime.

Auddino scored a pair of second half goals and then assisted on a goal by Mason Landis (Stow, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary). Max King (Granville, Ohio/Granville) tallied the final goal of the match in the 66th minute with an assist from Macagey Laure (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington).

Jack Fowler (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) had two saves in goal for the Pioneers as Marietta recorded its fourth clean sheet of the season. Despite allowing eight goals, Heidelberg keeper Sigurd Ilestad made several phenomenal saves and finished the match with 12 total stops.

Marietta hosts Otterbein on Wednesday (Oct. 26) at 7 p.m.
