GAMBIER, Ohio — Marietta College dropped a hard-fought non-conference battle to Kenyon College by the score of 2-1 Wednesday (Sept. 22) evening. The Pioneers slip to 2-4-1 overall, while Kenyon improves to 5-1-1 on the season.
"At the end of the day this is a loss, and I really despise those, but our performance was good. We battled a very good Kenyon team and had good chances to draw level late in the game," Marietta head coach
Joe Bergin said. "Unfortunately, we didn't take advantage of them. But this level of performance gives me some hope that we are starting to put things together. We have one more non-conference game this weekend to continue to fine tune things before we start OAC play next weekend."
Kenyon wasted no time taking the lead scoring the first goal of the night less than minutes into the match. Gerardo Martinez had his shot blocked, but Sebastian Gaese gathered the deflection and put his follow-up shot in the back of the net.
Marietta leveled the match in the 32nd minute.
Jacob Roberto (Berea, Ohio/Berea-Midpark) subbed in for the Pioneers at the 31:10 mark and tallied the equalizer 25 seconds later. It was Roberto's first goal of the season.
Kenyon scored the game winner 13 minutes into the second half. Scott Upton picked up the assist on the goal by Sam Carson in the 59th minute.
Ryan Riccillo (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) went the distance in goal for Marietta recording four saves on the night. Ian McInturf had a pair of saves for the Lords.
Marietta closes out the non-conference portion of its schedule on Saturday (Sept. 25) when Chatham visits Marietta Field for a 7 p.m. match.
