MARIETTA, Ohio –
Reggie Grayek (Shavertown, Pa./Wyoming Seminary College Prep.) scored a pair of goals leading Marietta College to a 5-1 win over visiting Franciscan University Wednesday (Sept. 15) evening. The Pioneers improve to 1-3-1 overall, while Franciscan falls to 1-2 on the season.
" It certainly is nice to get on the right side of the ledger. After a rough start to the season, it feels good to get a win," Bergin said. "We have quite a bit of work to do to get to where I think we should be, but tonight we celebrate a win."
Marietta opened the scoring in the 10th minute of the match when Grayek took a pass from
Caden Ferguson (Mars, Pa./Mars Area). Ferguson played a ball to Grayek's feet, the forward beat the defender dribbled into the right corner of the box and place his shot into the far-left corner to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.
"Franciscan brought us problems with their press in the first half and it showed," Marietta head coach
Joe Bergin said. "At the half, we adjusted our approach and I believe that our second half was significantly better than the first."
Marietta doubled its lead in the 32nd minute of the match off of a corner kick.
Gavin Chappel (Oakdale, Pa./West Allegheny) drove a ball in from the corner and after it bounced off of the cross bar,
Sam Federici (Findlay, Ohio/Findlay) gathered the rebound and slotted the ball into the lower left corner, to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Pioneers.
Franciscan opened the second half scoring when Sebastian Koehler chested down the through ball from JP Bobak. Koehler placed his shot in the top right corner, to make the score 2-1 in the 67th minute of the match.
Marietta regained its two-goal advantage in the 75th minute when
Gavin Long (Surrey, United Kingdom/John Fisher School) and Ferguson combined for a give and go at the top of the 18-yard box. Long passed to Ferguson and he played it right back to Long who placed the ball passed the goalie into the lower right corner of the net.
The Pioneers made the score 4-1 when Ferguson centered the ball from the end line and Grayek got on the end of the pass to place his shot in the lower right corner of the goal. Grayek's second goal of night came in the 81st minute of the match.
Marietta scored in the final five seconds of the match when Long crossed the ball to the back post and Ferguson headed the ball low and into the back of the net. The Pioneers won the match 5-1.
Ryan Riccillo (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) notched his first win of the season in goal for the Pioneers. Riccillo went the distance and posted four saves. Jax Mautone had five saves for the Barons.
Marietta is back in action Friday (Sept. 17) evening when the Pioneers host Earlham College at 7 p.m.
