Volleyball defeated at Washington and Lee

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Marietta College volleyball team was defeated Friday (Sept. 10) in straight sets 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-18) by Washington and Lee.  With the loss the Pioneers are now 2-4 on the season and the Generals improve to 4-1 overall.  

Washington and Lee opened the first set with a 3-1 led.  The Marietta point was scored on a kill from Alayna Ricker (Columbus Grove, Ohio/Columbus Grove).  The Pioneers battled back and tied the first set at 7-7, behind kills from Ashley Ward (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson), Ricker, and a service ace from Lauren Radalia (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak).  The Generals answered with eight of the next nine points and led, 15-8 which forced a Marietta timeout.  Out of the timeout, the teams battled for the remainder of the set, and Washington and Lee took set one 25-15.

The Generals opened the second set with a 5-1 edge. The Pioneers answered with three of the next four points to trim the lead to 6-4, behind kills from Radalia and Ella Boyer (Bay Village, Ohio/Saint Joseph Academy).  Washington and Lee took control of the second set with an 8-0 run to hold a 14-4 advantage.  Marietta fought for the entire set, but fell 25-13.  

The Generals carried their momentum over to the third set and jumped out to 7-0 lead.  The Pioneers battled back with five straight points, behind a pair of blocks by Radalia and Boyer.  Marietta kept the set close as they trailed 11-8, behind a kill from Mia Silva (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton).  The set was 15-12 in favor of Washington and Lee before they rattled off six of the next seven points to lead, 21-13.  The Pioneers fought back to make the score 21-17, behind a pair of kills from Silva and an ace from Ashley Ward (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson).  The Generals took the third and final set, 25-18.

The Marietta offense was led by Boyer, she drove home eight kills, and had a pair of block assists in the match.  Silva pitched in with eight kills and a block assist in the match.  Braya Elsea (Circleville, Ohio/Logan Elm) led the defense with 13 digs in the match.    

The Pioneers will return to the court Saturday (Sept. 11) when they travel to take on Bridgewater, with the game scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
