Volleyball falls at Denison

GRANVILLE, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team kicked off the 2021 season when they fell to Denison University 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-12), on Wednesday (Sept. 1) evening.  The Pioneers are now 0-1 on the season, and the Big Red is 1-0 overall.  

Marietta jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set when Maggie Fellers (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) had back to back kills.  The Pioneers continued to play well early and a kill from Mia Silva (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton) put Marietta up 5-1.  Denison answered with the next four points to tie the game at 5-5.  The Big Red grabbed the lead with nine consecutive points in the middle of the set, and took set one 25-13.  

Denison led the second set 6-2 early on, with the Marietta points coming from kills by Braya Elsea (Circleville, Ohio/Logan Elm) and Fellers.  After the Big Red led 9-4, the. Pioneers answered with a 7-0 run to take an 11-9 edge.  Lauren Radalia (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) and Elsea had kills during the run, and Elsea also tallied a service ace.  The second set remained deadlocked at 16 points apiece.  Denison rattled off nine of the final 10 points, and took set two 25-17.  

The third set was tight early, and was tied at 5-5, with kills from Fellers and Silva.  The Big Red scored nine of the next 10 points to lead 14-6.  Denison continued to play well and led 19-7 and won the third set, 25-12.  

Marietta was led by Fellers on the offensive end, as she had eight kills, and two block assists in the match.  Silva added to the offense with six kills and a block assist.  The Pioneer defense was led by Makayla Schilling (Blacklick, Ohio/Licking Heights) as she tallied nine digs.  Elsea added to the defense with five digs, and a service ace.  

The Pioneers will return to the court Friday (Sept. 3) when they host the BSN Sports River City Classic.
