CLEVELAND, Ohio — Case Western Reserve University scored a pair of first half goals to defeat Marietta College by the score of 2-0 Wednesday (Sept. 1) evening in nonconference men's soccer action. The match was the season opener for both schools.
The Spartans struck for two goals 93 seconds apart in the first half for the only scoring of the match. Josh Cook recovered a loose ball on the left side of the 18-yard box and fired a shot into the upper right corner of the net for the first goal of the match in the 15th minute.
A minute and a half later Case Western was awarded a corner kick. Austin Zeleznik took the corner from the left side of the field and sent the ball into the far post where an unmarked Henry Barnes tapped it into the net for a 2-0 Spartan lead.
Case Western's defense frustrated the Pioneer attackers all evening. Marietta took 10 total shots, but was limited to just a pair of shots on goal for the night.
Jackson Kallen recorded the clean sheet in goal for the Spartans making two saves.
Ryan Riccillo (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) went the distance in net for the Pioneers and made four saves.
Marietta travels to Geneva College on Saturday (Sept. 4) for a 7 p.m. match.
