BEXLEY, Ohio – The Marietta College women's lacrosse team fell 22-5 on the road at Capital University, on Wednesday (April 7) evening. With the win the Crusader improve to 8-2 overall and 8-2 in Ohio Athletic Conference play, and with the loss the Pioneers are now 5-6 overall and 5-6 in OAC action.
"Not the deficit we'd like to show against a good team, however I'm extremely proud of how we responded after a tough first half. It's easy to neglect how young of a team we are and that this is only the second time our program is seeing tough, conference competition. We're still gaining important experience on the lacrosse side of things and every night won't be our night stat wise," said Head Coach
Malory Nadrah. "However, we try to emphasize a lot of growing off the box score that is going to help build a successful foundation for our future. Our entire squads response tonight after the first half shows incredible mental toughness and will pay off as we continue to evolve and grow as a program."
Capital opened the game quickly, as they held a 5-0 advantage nine minutes into the game. Marietta halted the run when
Lindy Brobeck (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) scored an unassisted goal. The Crusaders answered with eight straight goals to lead 13-1, with six minutes to play in the half.
Kayla Kearns (Preston, Md./Easton) stopped the run with a goal for the Pioneers, off of an assist by
Shelby Millheim (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom). Capital scored the final three goals of the half and led, 16-2 at the intermission.
Marietta scored the opening goal of the second half when
Megan McGriff (Lakewood, Colo./Bear Creek) scored off of a pass from
Sophia Verona (Shinnston, W. Wa./Our Lady of Victory). The Crusaders scored the next three goals, and held a 19-3 edge with 16 minutes to play in the game. Two and a half minutes later,
Anna Callow (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) scored a goal for the Pioneers. After a goal from Capital, Brobeck scored her second goal of the game. The Crusaders scored the final two goals, and won 22-5.
"Kayla had a terrific game tonight. We set clear, individual goals for each player tonight and she crushed each one of them. We're excited to see her reaching her potential and becoming her own as a well rounded, strong player," concluded Coach Nadrah.
Maddie Leers (Crystal Lake, Ill./Barrington) played the first half in goal, she faced 22 shots, 19 of which were on goal, and made three saves.
Lauren Redfern (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) played the second half in net, she faced 12 shots, 10 of which were on goal, and made four saves.
The Pioneers will return to the field Saturday (April 10) when they host Ohio Northern University, with the game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
