AUSTINTOWN, Ohio — Marietta College junior
Sam Mathews (Fairfield, Ohio/Badin) was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week Monday (April 5) afternoon by the conference office. This is the second weekly award for the Etta Express as Mathews joins
Zach Boyd (Kent, Ohio/Tallmadge), who was named the first Hitter of the Week this season.
Mathews helped lead the No. 10 ranked Etta Express to a perfect 5-0 week, including a four-game sweep of John Carroll University. He pitched in three games last week, making one start, and went 1-0 with two saves. He also posted a 0.00 earned run average after not allowing a run in 9.2 innings of work.
Mathews got the start and win in Marietta's 26-2 win at Wilmington on Monday. He threw 4.0 innings and allowed just two hits and struck out two without issuing a walk.
Against John Carroll, Mathews got the save in the first game of the series, a 6-2 MC win, throwing 2.2 innings and giving up two hits with four strikeouts. He got his second save of the series in game 3 working 3.0 innings of one-hit relief and again striking out four Blue Streak hitters.
For the season, Mathews is 2-0 with three saves and a 0.00 earned run average. He has appeared in six games, making two starts, and struck out 22 batters in 18.0 innings of work. Mathews has not walked a batter this season.
A four-game set with Capital University is next on the Pioneer schedule. The Etta Express hosts the Crusaders on Saturday (April 10) for a 1 p.m. non-conference doubleheader and then travels to Columbus on Sunday (April 11) for two more non-conference games at 1 p.m.
