COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Marietta College women's tennis team dropped an Ohio Athletic Conference match at Capital University Tuesday (April 28) afternoon by the score of 9-0. The Pioneers finish the season with a 1-7 overall record and 1-6 in the OAC. Capital improves to 3-3 on the season and 3-3 in the OAC.
An injury left Marietta with just five players for the match. The Pioneers were forced to forfeit team points at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles spotting the Crusaders a 2-0 lead before the first serve of the match.
Capital picked up a quick point at No. 1 doubles when Mariah Sadek and Kelli Wright-Lovell downed
Destiny Grim (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and
Reagan Haas (Marietta, Ohio/Parkersburg Catholic (W.Va.)), 8-1. The best match of the day came at No. 2 doubles. Abigail Hartshorn and
Anne Thompson (Wilmington, Ohio/Clinton-Massie) battled Maggie Haas and Rachel Smith but fell 9-7.
Amy Wright-Lovell clinched the team victory for Capital with a 6-0, 6-1 win over
Abby Ketchum (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) at No. 5 singles.
The Crusaders posted straight-set win in each of the singles matches. At No. 1, Sadek defeated Thompson, 6-1 and 6-4. Kelli Wright-Lovell topped Grim at No. 2, 6-1 and 6-0.
Smith took down Haas at No. 3 by the scores of 6-0 and 6-1, while Josei Nichols beat Hartshorn at No. 4, 6-2 and 6-1.
