BEXLEY, Ohio – The Marietta College women's lacrosse team fell 19-7 to Capital University, in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament quarterfinals on Tuesday (April 27) evening.
"I'm proud of our first ever playoff game appearance. We know we could've played better on the circle and in the attacking end, but overall we fought hard against a great, talented top team in our conference. I'm incredibly proud of the season we have had and the success we've generated so early in our program's existence," said Head Coach
Malory Nadrah. "In returning most of our roster and having four recruited classes for the first time next year, I'm beyond excited for our future and am so proud to coach this group of amazing young women."
Capital opened the scoring with the first three goals of the game and led 3-0 just over three minutes into the game. Marietta halted the run when
Hope Adams (Delaware, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) scored an unassisted goal. After the Crusaders made the score 4-1,
Shannon Doyle (Gibsonia, Pa/Mars Area) found the back of the net, to make the score 4-2 at the 22:33 minute mark. Capital scored back to back goals and held a 6-2 edge with 18 minutes to play in the half. Doyle halted the run with her second goal of the game, to make the score 6-3. The Crusaders scored the final eight goals of the half, and led 14-3 at the intermission.
Adams scored the first goal of the second half, less than a minute into the half, to trim the margin to 14-4. Three minutes later Capital scored a goal, but a minute and a half later Doyle scored her third goal of the game, and made the score 15-5. The Crusaders tallied the next three goals, and held an 18-5 edge. The Pioneers scored two of the final three goals of the game, but fell 19-7. The final two Marietta goals were scored by Doyle.
Maddie Leers (Crystal Lake, Ill./Barrington) and
Lauren Redfern (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) split time in goal for the Pioneers, the duo faced 33 shots, 26 of which were on goal, and the tandem made seven saves.
Marietta was led by Doyle, she had a team leading five goals, four draw controls, and caused a pair of turnovers. Adams scored a pair of goals in the game, and had a draw control.
Carlee Kernodle (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park) led the Pioneers in draw controls with five.
Kyla Andreas (Shirley, N.Y./Longwood) tied for the team led in caused turnovers with two.
"I can't thank Lauren and Shannon enough for their dedication and passion for this program. I have a heavy heart for Lauren as our first recruited athlete to graduate the program. Her leadership and commitment have been great contributions in building this program," concluded Coach Nadrah. "I'm so happy Shannon got to finish her playing career with us. In her short time she's taught our young team so much. I'm incredibly proud of each of them and can't wait to see them succeed in the rest of their schooling."
Marietta finished the season with a record of 7-10 overall. The seven wins is the most in a season in program history.
