COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Marietta College men's lacrosse team dropped a road contest at Capital University, 14-2 on Saturday (March 6) afternoon. With the win the Crusaders improve to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play, and the loss drops the Pioneers to 1-1 overall, and 0-1 in the OAC.
Capital opened the scoring a minute into the game, and scored three straight goals to lead 3-0, with nine minutes to play in the first quarter. Marietta held the Crusaders scoreless for the final nine minutes of the quarter and the Pioneers trailed 3-0 to enter the second.
Marietta scored the opening goal of the second quarter when
Zach Radcliffe (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) scored an unassisted goal, to trim the Capital edg to 3-1 two minutes into the quarter. After six minutes of scoreless action, the Crusaders scored the final three goals of the quarter, and led 6-1 at the intermission.
The Pioneers notched the opening goal of the third quarter at the 11:54 minute mark, when
Chase Mullen (Cabot, Pa./Knoch) scored off a feed from Radcliffe. After two minutes of back and forth action, Capital closed the third quarter with three consecutive goals, and led 9-2.
The Crusaders scored five fourth quarter goals, and led 14-2. Marietta battled for the remainder of the game, but fell 14-2.
Dane Barker (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) played all 60 minutes in the net, he faced 41 shots, 24 of which were on goal, and made 10 saves in the game.
The Pioneers were led by Mullen, and Radcliffe as each scored a goal. Defensively, Marietta was led by
Cullen Zaferopolos (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Berea-Midpark), he caused a team high three turnovers.
Zach Rush (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central),
Robby Guy (LaPlata, Md./St. Mary's Ryken),
Justin Blasko (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary), and
Blake Chisholm (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon McMillan) all added a caused turnover for the defensive effort.
Nathan Grover (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) was solid on the face-off, he won 11-19 face-offs taken.
Marietta will be back in action Saturday (March 13) when they travel to take on the University of Mount Union, with the game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
