Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women’s Lacrosse defeated by Mount Union

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's lacrosse team was defeated by the University of Mount Union, 16-5 on Saturday (March 13) afternoon on Marietta Field.  The win improves the Purple Raiders to 5-1 overall and 5-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, and with the loss the Pioneers are now 2-4 overall and 2-4 in OAC action.

"Not the result we wanted today but there were some highlights in today's game. Our defense worked incredibly hard and made Mount earn every goal," said Head Coach Malory Nadrah.  "We had some really good spurts where we held down defense through a lot of Mount offense. Our midfield did a great job on the circle getting us possessions to compete. Lots of improvement shown from the 2019 game."

The first four minutes of the game were scoreless, Mount Union broke the scoring drought and took a 1-0 lead four minutes into the game.  Marietta answered 30 seconds later to tie the game at 1-1, when Kayla Kearns (Preston, Md./Easton) scored her first goal of the season off of a feed from Mackenzie Dyott (Easton, Md./Easton).  The Purple Raiders scored the next three goals, and led 4-1 at the 24:11 minute mark of the half.  Hope Adams (Delaware, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) made the score 4-2, with an unassisted goal.  After a Mount Union goal, Natalie Cocco (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) found the back of the net off a free position shot, to make the score 5-3, with 21 minutes to play in the half.  The Purple Raiders were able to score six consecutive goals, over a span of 18 minutes, and held an 11-3 advantage.  With two minutes to play in the half, Adams scored her second goal of the game off a free position shot, to make the score 11-4 at the intermission.

After four minutes of back and forth action to open the second half, Mount Union scored a pair of goals to hold a 13-4 edge.  The teams battled for 10 minutes without a goal, and Cocco made the score 13-5, when she scored her second goal of the game.  The Purple Raiders finished the game with three consecutive goals, and won 16-5.

Maddie Leers (Crystal Lake, Ill./Barrington) played all 60 minutes in net for the Pioneers, she faced 32 shots, 24 of which were on goal, and made eight saves.

Marietta was led by Adams and Cocco as each had a pair of goals in the game.  Kearns scored a goal in the game.  Shelby Millheim (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) led the Pioneers in draw controls with three.  Shannon Doyle (Gibsonia, Pa/Mars Area) had a solid defense performance, she caused a game high five turnovers, and picked up four groundballs.  Casey Roeder (Milford, Ohio/Milford) added to the defensive effort for three caused turnovers, and four groundballs.

Marietta will return to the field Wednesday (March 17) when they host John Carroll University, with the game scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
