WESTERVILLE, Ohio — Marietta College scored the first five points of the game and never trailed as the Pioneers defeated Otterbein University 70-57 Wednesday (Dec. 15) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference women's basketball action.
With the win, Marietta improves to 7-1 overall and 2-1 in the OAC. Otterbein falls to 6-2 on the season and is also 2-1 in league play. The Pioneers travel to No. 3 ranked John Carroll University on Saturday (Dec. 18) for a 2 p.m. game against the Blue Streaks.
"That was a really big OAC road win, and I am so proud of how we responded after our game on Sunday. We played zone and we typically don't, but we really bought into it," Marietta head coach
Kole Vivian said. "Our bench was huge again. Camille and Makenzie really anchored the middle of the floor for us. For us to play a zone to take away their drives and still be plus 16 on the glass, that's pretty special."
Three Pioneers scored in double figures led by
Hannah Schill (Rootstown, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) with 13 points.
Devin Hefner (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg South) scored 12 points and
Kelly Levering (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) added 10 points and five rebounds.
Camille Cummins (MIddlefield, Ohio/Cardinal) pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.
Angelia Jackson led all scorers with 17 points for the Cardinals. Katie McCray added 14 points, while Kathleen DeCarlo chipped in with 12 points and seven boards.
Otterbein kept the game close in the first quarter staying within a few points of the Pioneers. Cummins hit a jumper with 1:36 left in the opening period to give Marietta an eight-point lead, 15-7. The Pioneers added a bucket from Levering and led 17-9 at the end of the first quarter.
Marietta extended its lead 13 points midway through the second quarter. Hefner hit a step back jumper making it 25-12. The Pioneers took a 37-24 advantage into halftime.
The Pioneers pushed the margin to as many as 23 points. An old fashioned three-point play from Schill with 6:52 left in the third quarter made it 49-26 in favor of the Navy Blue and White. Otterbein chipped away at the deficit and trimmed it to 16 points, 55-39, heading into the fourth quarter.
Otterbein outscored the Pioneers 18-15 in the final period cutting the final margin to 13 points, 70-57.
