MARIETTA, Ohio — The No. 3 ranked Marietta College men's basketball easily defeated an overmatched Geneva College squad by the score of 102-70 Tuesday (Nov. 23) evening in Ban Johnson Arena. Marietta improves to 3-2 on the season, while the Golden Tornadoes slip to 2-2 overall.
Both teams traded three-pointers in the first few minutes of the game.
Lukas Isaly (Clarington, Ohio/River) hit the first triple for the Pioneers and
Cooper Parrott (Willard, Ohio/Willard) nailed a pair. Geneva countered with two Ryan Rachic triples and one from Amos Luptak.
With the score tied, 9-9, Isaly hit a jumper to give Marietta a two-point lead with 17:09 left in the first half. The Pioneers would lead the rest of the way.
Marietta went on a 16-2 run building a 15-point lead, 29-14, with 11 minutes remaining in the opening period. Six different Pioneers scored during the run with
Jason Ellis (Marion, Ohio/Marion Harding) hitting a pair of jumpers, including one from behind the arc.
The lead stayed in double figures and climbed as high as 19 points.
Sahmi Willoughby (Groveport, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) got an offensive rebound and layup at the 4:09 mark to make it 42-23. Marietta would lead 47-32 at the break.
Marietta heated up after halftime shooting a sizzling 78% from three-point range hitting 11-of-14 attempts from long range in the second half.
An Ellis three-pointer, one of six in the game, at the 8:54 mark gave the Pioneers their biggest lead of the night, 33 points, 80-47. Ellis led all scorers with 27 points.
Parrott had five triples in the game and finished with 17 points and six rebounds. Willoughby notched 13 points and nine boards, including seven offensive rebounds, while Isaly finished with 12 points.
Lyle Tipton led the Tornadoes with 22 points. Rachic had 21 points and nine rebounds and Luptak added 12 points.
Marietta is off until Saturday (Dec. 4) when the Pioneers open Ohio Athletic Conference play against Ohio Northern University. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Ban Johnson Arena.
