WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-13,25-15, 25-20) at 25th ranked Otterbein on Wednesday (Oct. 6) evening. With the loss the Pioneers fall to 3-12 overall and 0-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference and with the win the Cardinals improve to 14-2 overall and 3-0 in OAC play.
Otterbein jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the opening set of the match. Marietta halted the run on a kill by
Jenna Szabelski (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson). The Cardinals continued their strong play and led 10-2. The Pioneers scored the next two points with a kill by
Lauren Radalia (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak). Otterbein scored six of the next seven points and led 16-5, with the Marietta point coming on a kill from
Mia Silva (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton). The Pioneers battled for the entire set but fell, 25-13.
The Cardinals carried their momentum over to the second set, as they held a 6-1 edge early. Marietta cut into the lead with five of the next six points to trim the Otterbein lead to 7-6. The Pioneer run saw kills from Silva and
Maggie Fellers (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington), and a service ace from Silva. The Cardinals took control of the set with a 13-2 run to lead 20-8, and Otterbein took set two, 25-15.
Marietta scored the opening point of the third set on a kill from Silva. The Cardinals answered with six of the next seven points to lead, 6-2. The Pioneers kept the third set close behind a kill from
Becca Phelps (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison Comprehensive) to make the score 10-6. Otterbein scored seven of the next eight points to lead 17-7. After the Carindals held a 21-12 lead, Marietta scored eight of the next nine points to trim the lead to 22-20. The run was led by a pair of kills from Radalia, a kill from Silva, and an ace from Szabelski. Otterbein scored the final three points of the set to win 25-20.
The Pioneer offense was led by Fellers and Radalia, the dou each had seven kills in the match. Defensively Marietta was led by
Makayla Schilling (Blacklick, Ohio/Licking Heights), she tallied a match high 14 digs.
The Pioneers will return to the court Saturday (Oct. 9) when they travel to take on Heidelberg, with the match scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
