MARIETTA, Ohio — Muskingum University defeated Marietta College by the score of 6-3 Tuesday (Oct. 5) afternoon in women's tennis action. The loss drops the Pioneers to 2-2 on the season. The Muskies improve to 4-4 overall.
Payton Brinks (Mattawan, Mich./Mattawan) and
India Flores (Waverly, W.Va./Williamstown) downed Evelyn Pauquette and Scarlett Martell, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles to start the day. Muskingum evened the match with an 8-3 win at No. 1 where Gracie Andrews and Sarah Ann Hafner beat Ashton Binegar and
Anne Thompson (Wilmington, Ohio/Clinton-Massie).
The Pioneers reclaimed the lead when Abigail Hartshorn and Madilyn McKitrick outlasted Kaylee Anstaett and Amanda Plaskett, 8-6.
Muskingum claimed the first three singles matches to take a 4-2 lead. At No. 6, Jane Boyer topped Parkar Mauk, 6-3 and 6-2. Hafner blanked Thompson at No. 1, 6-0 and 6-0. Andrews bested Binegar at No. 2, 6-2 and 6-1.
Flores kept Marietta alive with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 4 over Martell. Muskingum secured the victory with straight-set wins at Nos. 4 and 5 singles. At No. 4, Pauquette downed Brinks, 6-4 and 6-1, while Plaskett beat Hartshorn at No. 5, 6-4 and 6-3.
Marietta closes out the fall season with a 2:00 p.m. match against Westminster on Sunday (Oct. 17).
