Capital blanks Men's Soccer 4-0

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Capital University defeated Marietta College by the score of 4-0 Wednesday (Oct. 13) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference men's soccer action. The loss drops Marietta to 4-6-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the OAC. The Comets improve to 8-4-0 on the season and 3-1-0 in the OAC.

"We picked a bad night to play our worst defensive game in a while. I'm not unhappy with our offensive play but we couldn't stop them. Capital is a team that is well coached and he had them flying," Marietta head coach Joe Bergin said. "We are not pressing the panic button by any stretch of the imagination, but we have to play more of a complete game on Saturday. This is the OAC and it's not supposed to be easy. Tonight was a great example of that."

The Pioneers found themselves in an early hole when Capital punched one in less than five minutes into the match. Jack Kossoudji scored the first of two goals on the night with an assist from Jarrett Puckett.

Kossoudji made it 2-0 in the 24th minute. His second goal was assisted by Jack Francisco and Jacob Taylor.

The Comets extended the lead to 3-0 just before the end of the first half. Devon Hess found the back of the net in the 43rd minute with an assist from Veron Fongeh.

Capital added an insurance goal in the second half. Hess tallied his second goal of the match in the 55th minute with assists from Francisco and Chase Geddis.

Connor Sexton and Kellen Sargent combined for the clean sheet in goal for the Comets. Sexton started and had three saves in 62-plus minutes, while Sargent played 27-plus minutes without a save.

Ryan Riccillo (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) started in goal for Marietta and made one save. He allowed four goals in 59-plus minutes. Joey Backhaus (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) has a pair of saves in 30-plus minutes of action.

Capital took 21 shots to just seven for the Pioneers. The Comets had a slim 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. Capital took eight corner kicks to only two for Marietta.

Marietta travels to Wilmington College on Saturday (Oct. 16) for a 7 p.m. match.
