Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball drops road contest at Otterbein

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Marietta College women's basketball team was defeated by Otterbein University, 108-75 on Saturday (Jan. 23) evening.  With the loss the Pioneers fall to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) competition, and the Cardinals improve to 1-1 overall, and 1-1 in the OAC.

The first quarter got off to a slow start, as the game was tied at 2-2 at the 7:51 minute mark of the quarter, when Bailee Brooks (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls) converted a layup for Marietta.  Later in the quarter, Otterbein went on a quick 6-0 run and stretched its lead to 13-6 at the first media timeout.  The Cardinals came out of the timeout, and went on an 11-2 run that saw their lead swell to 24-9, with just under three minutes to play in the opening quarter.  Devin Hefner (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg South) halted the run with a layup.  Otterbein maintained a 33-17 lead to enter the second quarter.

The Cardinals rattled off six straight points to open the frame and, the Pioneers trailed 39-17 at the 8:46 minute mark.  Marietta continued to battle thru the middle of the quarter, and Hannah Schill (Rootstown, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) scored a couple of buckets to make the score 46-24 Otterbein, with just over five minutes to play in the half.  The Pioneers battled for the remainder of the half, but entered the intermission behind, 53-33.  Kelly Levering (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) led the Pioneers in the first half with six points, and four rebounds.

The third frame was a back and forth battle for a majority of the quarter.  Each team scored 14 points apiece thru seven minutes of play, and Marietta was led by Camille Cummins (MIddlefield, Ohio/Cardinal), and Schill as they each scored four points during that stretch.  Otterbein outscored the Pioneers 10-2 to close the third quarter, and led 77-49 to enter the final frame.

Marietta battled for the entire fourth quarter, but were unable to mount a comeback and fell, 108-75.  The fourth quarter offense was led by Olivia Gribble (Irwin, Pa./Norwin), she knocked down three, three pointers in the final frame.

The Pioneers were led by Brooks, she had 11 points, four rebounds, and notched a steal.  Erin Hahn (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville) pulled down a career and game high in rebounds with 11 in the game.  Marietta out rebounded the Cardinals 52-41, and 30-10 on the offensive glass.  The 30 offensive rebounds by the Pioneers is the most in a game since Marietta pulled down 34 offensive boards against Hiram College in 2002.

Marietta will return to the court Friday (Jan. 29) when they travel to take on Baldwin Wallace University, with tip off scheduled for 7 p.m.
