Softball sweeps on day two in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Marietta College softball team earned a pair of wins over Ohio Wesleyan University and Defiance College on Monday (March 9) afternoon.  The Pioneers defeated the Battling Bishops, 11-2 in game one, and won 4-3 over the Yellow Jackets in game two.

After a scoreless first inning the Battling Bishops got on the board with a run in the top of the second to grab a 1-0 edge.  Marietta answered back in the bottom of the third inning.  Maddi Liston (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) got the inning started with a single and Hannah Richardson (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) follow with a single of her own.  Later in the inning, a single from Jordan Pallay (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) drove home Alyssa Cook (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) who pinch ran from Liston.  The Pioneers took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third when Lauren Rockocy (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to plate Riley Lollathin (Clarington, Ohio/River).  Ohio Wesleyan answered right back with a run in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game at 2-2.  Marietta regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Kylie Daugherty (Newport, Ohio/Frontier), Kaitlyn Carpenter (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North), and Liston all reached to load the bases.  The next batter Richardson walked home Daugherty, and a single by Pallay plated Carpenter to put the Pioneers on top 4-2.  Back to back bases loaded walks by Erin Miller (Woodsfield, Ohio/Monroe Central) and Rockocy increased the Marietta advantage to 6-2.  After a Maicy Kirk (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) single made the score 7-2 and kept the bases loaded, Abby Lewis (Delaware, Ohio/Delaware Hayes) delivered a pinch hit three run double to left center field to give the Pioneers a 10-2 edge.  The fourth inning continued when Daugherty singled up the middle and was plated by a triple from Carpenter.  Marietta won 11-2 in five innings.

Richardson was in the circle for game one.  She pitched four innings allowed two runs, on five hits, and struck out a batter. Ashton Helmke (Defiance, Ohio/Tinora) pitched the final frame in game one and allowed one hit and no runs in her inning of work.

In game two, the Pioneers got on the board first when Richardson hit a solo homerun to lead off the top of the second inning, and gave Marietta a 1-0 advantage.  The Pioneers added to their lead in the top of third when Rockocy walked and advanced to third on a single by Daugherty.  Rockocy came across to score on a double steal, to put Marietta up 2-0.  The Pioneers continued their third inning when Liston singled through the left side and plated Daugherty, to give Marietta a 3-0 advantage.  The Yellow Jackets battled back to tie the game in the bottom of the third at three runs apiece.  The next three innings were scoreless and the teams entered the seventh inning tied at 3-3.  Daugherty got the inning started with a one out double off the left center fence, and advanced to third on a fly out to right field by Carpenter.  Daugherty scored the go ahead run on a wild pitch.  Liston slammed the door with a three up, three down, bottom of the seventh and the Pioneers won, 4-3.

Liston pitched a complete game, to earn her second win on the season.  She allowed three runs, on two hits, and struck out three.
