Women’s Basketball cruises past Muskingum

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's basketball team cruised to an 84-54 win over Muskingum University on Wednesday (Feb. 19) evening inside Ban Johnson Arena.  With the win the Pioneers improve to 12-12 overall and 8-9 in the Ohio Athletic Conference and with the loss the Fighting Muskies fall to 3-19 overall and 1-16 in the OAC.

Head Coach Kole Vivian said, "We didn't have a great start, but we really got in a groove after the first five minutes or so.  I thought we moved the ball well on offense and had a number of players make an impact tonight."

After Devin Hefner (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg South) scored the opening basket of the game Muskingum went on 9-0 run that saw them take a 9-2 edge three minutes into the game.  The run was halted by a jumper from Luce Duritza (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler Area).  Late in the first quarter, the Pioneers opened up a 9-0 run that saw them take a 17-15 edge with a minute to play in the quarter.  The run was highlighted by back to back three pointers from Marlo Taylor (Kimbolton, Ohio/Cambridge).  Marietta entered the second quarter ahead, 19-16.

After the teams traded for the first six minutes of second quarter action, the Pioneers ended the second quarter on a 12-1 run, to led 40-24 at the intermission.  The run was sparked by four consecutive points from Bailee Brooks (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls), and the run was highlighted by a steal and fast break layup from Erin Hahn (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville).  Marietta outscored the Fighting Muskies 21-8 in the second quarter.

The teams swapped baskets for the first five minutes of the third quarter.  The Pioneers saw their lead swell to 57-27, behind a 13-0 run.  The run was started by back to back threes from Taylor and capped by five straight points from Jill Congrove (Circleville, Ohio/Logan Elm).  Marietta ended the third quarter strong, and held a 66-36 lead to enter the final frame.

The Pioneers played a solid first five minutes of the fourth quarter, and Marietta maintained a 79-43 advantage with just over five minutes to play in the game.  Baskets from Haley Ross (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora), and Emma Cannon (Wooster, Ohio/Dalton) late in the fourth quarter put the game away, and the Pioneers won, 84-54.

Marietta was led by Alexis Enochs (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye) as she had 18 points, four rebounds, and a pair of steals.  Taylor added 15 points on 5-9 shooting from behind the arc.  Camille Cummins (MIddlefield, Ohio/Cardinal) had a strong night on the glass, as she had a game high nine rebounds.

Marietta will return to the court Saturday (Feb. 22) when they host Heidelberg University on Senior Day, with tip off scheduled for 3 p.m.
