LEXINGTON,Ky. – The Marietta College men's lacrosse team opened its 2020 campaign with a 14-3 loss to Transylvania University on Saturday (Feb. 15) afternoon at Pat Deacon Stadium. With the loss Marietta is 0-1 on the season and Transy is 1-0 overall.
Marietta jumped on top 1-0 six seconds into the game when
Jimmy Border (Cranberry Township, Pa. /Seneca Valley) won the initial faceoff, drove down the field, and scored the opening goal of the season. Marietta led for four and half minutes of action before Transylvania responded to tie the game at the 10:25 mark of the opening quarter. After nearly five minutes of scoreless action Transy scored the final three goals of the quarter, and entered the second frame ahead, 4-1.
Transy carried its momentum over to the second quarter with five consecutive goals, to take a 9-1 advantage with seven minutes to play in the half. The Marietta defense buckled down and held Transy scoreless for the final seven minutes of action, but the offense could not convert on their opportunities. Marietta trailed 9-1 at the intermission.
Transy opened the third quarter will a goal, one minute into the quarter. Marietta responded less than a minute later when
Connor Ficke (Saint Leonard, Md./Calvert) scored off of a feed from
Jackson McGill (New Market, Md./Oakdale). Two minutes later Transy answered with a goal and held an 11-2 edge at the 11:13 minute mark of the third quarter. After four minutes of play, Ficke scored an unassisted goal for his second goal of the game. Transy scored the final goal of the quarter, and entered the fourth quarter ahead, 12-3.
The fourth quarter saw Transy score a pair of goals, to take a 14-3 edge. Marietta was unable to find the back of the net in the quarter, and Marietta fell, 14-3.
Marietta was led by Ficke as he had two goals, a team high five ground balls, and caused a turnover. Border scored a goal in the game, and picked up three ground balls. Border took all the faceoffs for Marietta and won nine.
Jacob Morlando (White Bear Lake, Minn./Stillwater) led the defense with a pair of caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Matthew Mapstone (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) and
Dane Barker (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) each played a half in the goal, the duo faced 47 shots, 24 of which were on goal, and made 10 saves.
Marietta will return to action Saturday (Feb. 22) when they host Earlham College, with the game scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
