MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's basketball team fell to Ohio Athletic Conference opponent John Carroll University, 74-50 on Saturday (Feb.1) afternoon inside Ban Johnson Arena. The win improves the Blue Streaks to 17-2 overall and 11-1 in the OAC and with the loss the Pioneers fall to 9-10 overall and 5-7 in OAC action.
After John Carroll scored the first four points game, Marietta answered with six consecutive points to take a 6-4 edge three minutes into the game. The run was started by a three from
Alexis Enochs (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye), and capped by an old fashioned three point play from
Bailee Brooks (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls). The Blue Streaks responded with a 14-2 run that saw them take an 18-8 advantage, with just under three minutes remaining in the first quarter. Marietta scored the final three points of the quarter, behind a jumper from
Camille Cummins (MIddlefield, Ohio/Cardinal) and a foul shot from
Luce Duritza (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler Area).
The Pioneers cut the John Carroll lead to 20-16 early in the second quarter when
Marlo Taylor (Kimbolton, Ohio/Cambridge) knocked down a three. The Blue Streaks answered with a 13-1 run to open up a 33-17 edge, with just over two minutes to play in the half. The run was halted by back to back jumpers from
Devin Hefner (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg South). John Carroll scored the final four points of the half, and entered the intermission ahead, 37-21.
Marietta opened the third quarter on a 5-0 run to trim the Blue Streaks lead to 37-26 at the 7:23 minute mark of the quarter. The run was highlighted by Hefner as she scored all five points. The Pioneers were able to cut the lead to 11 points a couple of times in the quarter, but entered the final frame behind 49-35.
John Carroll outscored Marietta 12-5 through the first four minutes of the final quarter, and held a 61-40 lead, which forced a Pioneers timeout. The Blue Streaks closed out the game strong, and won 74-50.
The Pioneers were led by Hefner as she had 15 points, three steals, and a pair of rebounds. Brooks added 10 points, four rebounds, and a game high four steals.
Marietta will return to the court Wednesday (Feb. 5) when they travel to take on Capital University, with tip off scheduled for 7 p.m.
