MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's basketball team dropped their Ohio Athletic Conference game against Wilmington, 75-65, on Saturday (Jan. 4) inside Ban Johnson Arena. With the loss the Pioneers fall to 4-7 overall and 0-4 in the OAC, and with the win the Quakers improve to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in OAC action.
"We couldn't get stops and scores when we really needed them late in the game. Credit Wilmington for finishing the game," said Head Coach
Kole Vivian. "We were much better at starting halves tonight, but need to be more detailed to beat better teams in the OAC."
The teams traded baskets for the opening five minutes of the game, and Marietta lead, 9-6 midway through the opening quarter. The Pioneer buckets were all from three-point range and scored by
Bailee Brooks (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls), and
Kate Liston (Little Hocking, Ohio/Warren Local). Wilmington scored the final four points of the quarter and led, 10-9 to enter the second quarter.
Marietta quickly took the lead in the second quarter behind a 5-0 run. The run was started when
Haley Ross (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) made a fast break layup and was capped by a three from Brooks. The Quakers responded with an 10-0 run to regain an 20-14 edge, three minutes into the second quarter. Wilmington was able to extend a double-digit lead with strong play to end the half, and entered the intermission ahead, 39-29.
The third quarter was a back and forth battle through the first six minutes of the quarter, as each team scored 11 points, and the Quakers lead, 50-40. The Pioneer points were scored by
Camille Cummins (MIddlefield, Ohio/Cardinal), Brooks, and Enochs. Over the final four minutes of the third quarter, Marietta trimmed the Wilmington lead to 54-45 to enter the final frame. The Pioneers were led by
Marlo Taylor (Kimbolton, Ohio/Cambridge) late in the third.
Wilmington opened the fourth quarter with back to back baskets to regain a double-digit edge, 58-45. Later in the fourth quarter, a quick 5-0 run from Marietta trimmed the Quakers lead to 64-57. The run was sparked by Taylor and capped by a three from Liston. The Pioneers could not get any closer and fell, 75-65.
Marietta was led by Enochs, as she scored 17 points, pulled down three rebounds, and had a pair of blocks. Taylor added to the offense with 15 points, and pulled down five rebounds. Liston and Brooks each tallied double-digit points with 12 and 11 respectively. Cummins tied a career high, and had a game high 17 rebounds.
The Pioneers will return to the court Wednesday (Jan. 8) when they travel to Muskingum University, with tip off scheduled for 7 p.m.
