Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer takes down No. 16 Case Western

MARIETTA, Ohio — Robert Phillips (Elkins, W.Va./Aquinas Academy (Pa.)) scored his second goal of the night in the final minute of regulation as Marietta College upset No. 16 ranked Case Western Reserve University, 2-1, Wednesday (Sept. 25) evening in men's soccer action. The Pioneers move to 4-4 on the season, while Case Western slips to 4-3-2 on the season.

"I am proud of our team. We put forth a tremendous team effort," Marietta head coach Joe Bergin said. "Going down 1-0 to the number 16 team in the nation we could have easily rolled over but we chose to fight. I love it. Case has learned how to win games late and we need to use this win as a springboard moving forward."

Scoring opportunities were limited in the first half as both teams battled to a scoreless tie at halftime. Marietta was the aggressor taking 11 shots in the first 45 minutes to just five for the Spartans.

Case Western grabbed the lead 10 minutes into the second half. Sean Atwater sent a cross into the 6-yard box where Seldon Magruder was waiting to head it inside the far right post in the 56th minute.

The goal energized Case Western and the Spartans controlled the tempo for much of the period. Marietta tallied the equalizer in the 78th minute when freshman Caden Ferguson (Mars, PA./Mars Area) sent a cross into the 18-yard box to Phillips who buried the ball into the lower left corner for his second goal of the season.

With time running out and the match headed to overtime, Phillips stunned the nationally-ranked Spartans when he took a shot from the top of the 18-yard box and beat Case keeper Jackson Kallen for the game winner in the 89th minute. Cole Pappas (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) picked up the assist on the deciding goal.

Dakota Penquite (Blanchester, Ohio/Blanchester) had a strong performance in goal for the Pioneers. The junior notched 10 saves including a couple shot from point blank range. Kallen finished with four saves in goal for the Spartans.

For the match, Case Western took 18 shots, including 11 on goal, to Marietta's 16 shots and seven on frame. The Pioneers took five corners, all in the first half, to three for Case Western.

Marietta plays at Bethany College on Wednesday (Oct. 2) afternoon. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
