OBERLIN, Ohio — The Marietta College men's soccer team posted its first win of the season defeating Oberlin College by the score of 4-1 Sunday (Sept. 1) afternoon. The Pioneers move to 1-1 on the young season, while Oberlin falls to 0-2 overall.
"We talked before the game about being ruthless, particularly around the goal and some of our goals today were good examples of that," Marietta head coach
Joe Bergin said. "It was nice to bounce back after, what I perceived to be, a less than MC soccer like performance on Friday."
Both teams tallied an early goal and then it was all Navy Blue and White following a 30-minute weather delay with 10 minutes remaining in the first half.
Dave Beattie (Russell, Ohio/West Geauga) gave Marietta the lead with his first collegiate goal. Beattie took a pass from
Cole Pappas (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) and beat Oberlin keeper, Parker Whitcomb, in the 14th minute.
The Yeomen answered a few minutes later when Jack McMillan scored in the 18th minute off an assist from Spencer Wright.
Following the weather delay,
Gabe Haines (Oakdale, Pa./West Allegheny Senior) notched his first career goal with less than 30 seconds left in the first period.
Jonah Ackerson (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) and
Jovonni Auddino (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville North) each assisted on the game winner.
The Pioneer upperclassmen took over in the second half.
Robert Phillips (Elkins, W.Va./Aquinas Academy (Pa.)) found the back of the net in the 52nd minute of an assist from
Luke Maher (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan). Maher closed out the scoring in the 55th minute with an assist from
Gavin Long (Surrey, United Kingdom/John Fisher School).
Dakota Penquite (Blanchester, Ohio/Blanchester) took over in goal for starter
Trevor Dykstra (Jamestown, N.Y./Falconer Central) in the second half. Penquite posted three saves in the final 45 minutes. Dykstra recorded a pair of saves in the first period. Whitcomb went the distance in goal for Oberlin and had four saves.
For the match, Marietta outshot the Yeomen, 19-11, including an 8-6 edge in shots on goal. The Pioneers took six corners to just two for Oberlin.
Marietta travels to Denison University on Thursday (Sept. 5). Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
