LIMA, Ohio — No. 3 seed Ohio Northern University defeated No. 6 seed Marietta College by the score of 5-0 Tuesday (April 30) afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Tournament.
The Pioneers finish the season with a 7-12 record. Ohio Northern improves to 13-8 and will face No. 2 seed Otterbein University in the semifinals on Friday.
The Polar Bears' No. 3 doubles team of Connor Christian and Andrew Cochran got on the board first with an 8-1 win over
Will Watson (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) and
Bryce Emerick (Hyndman, Pa./HOPE for Hyndman Charter). An 8-2 victory from Zach Beaschler and Hoang Do over
Hanyang Zhang (Beijing, China/Hefei No. 1) and
Eric DeLong (Lowell, Ohio/Marietta) at No. 2 doubles made it 2-0.
ONU's top doubles team of Vinh Thai and Noah Elliott completed the sweep with an 8-3 win against
Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and
Jack Hirschfield (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta).
Ohio Northern completed the team victory with a pair of 6-0, 6-0 wins at Nos. 5 and 6 singles. Cochran downed Emerick at No. 6 followed quickly by Christian topping Zhang at No. 5.
The other four singles matches were unfinished. At No. 1, Thai was leading Spencer, 6-0 and 2-1. Elliott was leading Hirschfield 1-0 at No. 2, while Do was ahead of DeLong at No. 3, 6-0 and 3-2. At No. 4, Beaschler was leading Watson, 6-0 and 5-0.
