BEREA, Ohio — Marietta College defeated Baldwin Wallace University by the score of 3-2 in the second game of an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday (March 24) afternoon giving head coach Brian Brewer his 500th win as the Pioneers' skipper.

Brewer, in his 16th season as Marietta's head coach, is 500-221-1 in the pinstripes. Good for a .693 winning percentage. Including his four seasons as the head coach at John Carroll, Brewer is 579-306-1 for his career. A .654 winning percentage.

Baldwin Wallace won the first game of the afternoon by the score of 11-2. With the split, Marietta is 6-9 overall and 1-1 in the OAC. The Yellow Jackets are 9-6 on the season and 1-1 in conference games.

Freshman Gino Sabatine (Alliance, Ohio/West Branch) (2-0) shut down one of the conference's most potent offenses to earn the win in game two. Sabatine started and went 7.0 strong innings allowing two unearned runs on just three base hits. He walked three and struck out four.

Fellow freshman Sam Mathews (Fairfield, Ohio/Badin) picked up his third save of the spring with 2.0 innings of relief. He allowed one hit, walked two and struck out five.

Sabatine had a shutout going into the eighth inning when he allowed a leadoff double and then issued a walk before being lifted in favor of Mathews. The Yellow Jackets would go to score two unearned runs in the frame to get within one, 3-2, heading into the ninth inning.

Spencer Aukerman (1-1) started and took the loss. He threw 3.0 innings and allowed one run on three hits and struck out three. Jack Raines allowed two runs on six hits in 5.0 innings of relief, while Michael Hubert worked the ninth inning for BW.

Marietta scored single runs in the third, seventh and eighth innings to build a 3-0 lead. Trent Castle (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) led off the Pioneer third with a double and moved to third on a ground out. He later scored on a two-out, RBI single from Damian Yenzi (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills).

Castle was the catalyst in the seventh inning as well reaching on an error and moving to third on a single from Drew Wilkinson (Medina, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit). A second BW error in the frame allowed Castle to score.

Marietta's final run came in the eighth when Mike Hale (Dayton, Ohio/Northmont) and Alex Page (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) hit back-to-back doubles putting the Pioneers in front, 3-0.

Baldwin Wallace managed to get the tying run to third base in the bottom of the ninth, but Mathews struck out the BW leadoff hitter to end the game.

Page and Wilkinson each had two hits in the game for Marietta.

Baldwin Wallace used three big innings en route to the 11-2 win. The Yellow Jackets scored five in the second and then added three runs in the fourth and three more in the eighth.
