Tiffin, Ohio – The Marietta College men's lacrosse team fell 12-4 on the road against Heidelberg University in their Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) opener on Saturday (March 23). With the loss the Pioneers fall to 3-4 overall and 0-1 in OAC action, and the Student Princes improve to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Heidelberg jumped out to an early lead, as they scored four unanswered goals in the first quarter. The Student Princes carried their momentum over to the second quarter, as they scored four consecutive goals and took an 8-0 edge into the intermission.
Marietta got on the board, when
Quinn Rundgren (Angier, N.C./Fuquay Varina) opened the scoring a minute and a half into the third quarter, to cut the Heidelberg advantage to 8-1. The Students Princes responded with four consecutive goals, and entered the final quarter ahead, 12-1.
The Pioneers battled back in the fourth quarter as they outscored Heidelberg 3-0. Marietta scored its first fourth quarter goal two minutes into the quarter, when Rundgren scored off a feed from
Connor Ficke (Saint Leonard, Md./Calvert). The final two Pioneer goals came from
Chad Stowell (Watertown, Minn./Delano), off assists from
Jackson McGill (New Market, Md./Oakdale) and
Justin Blasko (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary). Marietta could not complete the rally and, fell 12-4.
The Pioneers were led by Stowell as he had a pair of goals, and picked up five ground balls. Rundgren pitched in with two goals and a ground ball. Defensively,
Jacob Morlando (White Bear Lake, Minn./Stillwater) led the way as he caused a game high four turnovers.
Daniel Blaine (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) pitched in on defense with three caused turnovers, and a team leading six ground balls.
Ryan McLane (Avon, Ohio/Avon) and
Daniel Chasse (Salisbury, Md. /Salisbury) each played in the net, the duo faced 43 shots, 28 of which were on goal, and combined to make 16 saves.
Marietta will return to the field Wednesday (March 27) when they travel to Franciscan University, with the game scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
