HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — The Marietta College men's tennis team dropped a pair of matches in the Spring Tennis Fest. The Pioneers fell to Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham by the score of 6-3 on Wednesday (March 13) and to Webster by the score of 7-2 on Thursday (March 14). Marietta is now 3-5 on the season.
Jack Hirschfield (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) accounted for two of Marietta's three team points against FDU-Florham (3-3 overall). Hirschfield and his partner,
Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion), defeated Rich Bennett and Kevin Weller at No. 1 doubles, 8-3. Hirschfield beat Weller at No. 2 singles, 6-4 and 6-4.
The Pioneers' other point came at No. 5 singles where
Hanyang Zhang (Beijing, China/Hefei No. 1) posted a 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7) win over Chris Fiorenza.
Florham picked up wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles. At No. 2, Fiorenza and JT Murray downed
Eric DeLong (Lowell, Ohio/Marietta) and
Will Watson (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg), 8-6. Michael Laneve and Tyler Schacher topped
Bryce Emerick (Hyndman, Pa./HOPE for Hyndman Charter) and Zhang at No. 3, 8-5.
In the No. 1 singles match, Spencer fell to Bennett, 7-6 (8-6) and 6-4. At No. 3, John Bricker bested DeLong, 6-4 and 6-3. Murray beat Watson at No. 4, 6-2, 1-6 and 1-0 (10-8), while Laneve downed Emerick at No. 6, 8-0.
Watson claimed MC's two team points against Webster (6-2) beating Tom Shutzman at No. 4 singles, 2-6, 6-2 and 1-0 (10-4). He partnered with Emerick to beat Nicolas Andrade and Tanner Haugen at No. 3 doubles, 8-6.
In the No. 1 doubles match, Riley Muren and Austin Natiin were 8-5 winners over Hirschfield and Spencer. Charlie McGhee and Shutzman beat DeLong and Zhang at No. 2, 8-5.
Webster claimed the top three singles matches. At No. 1 Muren blanked Spencer, 6-0 and 6-0. Nation defeated Hirschfield at No. 2, 6-4 and 6-4, while McGhee beat DeLong at No. 3, 6-2 and 6-0.
At No. 5, Haugen was a 6-1, 6-4 winner against Zhang. In the final match, Harsh Jaswell downed Emerick at No. 6, 2-6, 6-3 and 1-0 (10-8).
Marietta wraps up play in the Spring Tennis Fest on Friday (March 15) with a 4 p.m. match against Nazareth College.
