PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Marietta College men's lacrosse team was defeated by Chatham University 17-7 Wednesday (March 13). With the loss the Pioneers drop to 2-2 on the season and the Cougars improve to 5-1 overall.
Chatham grabbed the lead four minutes into the first quarter with a pair of goals, to lead 2-0. Marietta responded two minutes later when
Connor Ficke (Saint Leonard, Md./Calvert) notched back to back goals to tie the game at 2-2 with just under seven minutes to play in the quarter. Ficke's second goal came off a feed from
Daniel Chasse (Salisbury, Md. /Salisbury). A minute later the Cougars regained their lead with a goal. After five and a half minutes of scoreless action, Chatham scored with three seconds to play in the first quarter, and led 4-2 to open the second quarter.
The second quarter started as a defensive battle, as the first five minutes were scoreless. The Cougars broke the drought with a goal at the 9:13 minute mark of the quarter. Three minutes later Chatham found the back of the net and extended its lead to 6-2. A minute and a half later the Pioneers cut into the Cougars lead when a feed from
Zach Klein (Evergreen, Co./Evergreen) led to Ficke's third goal of the game. Chatham scored a goal with just over a minute remaining in the half and Marietta entered the intermission behind, 7-3.
The Cougars opened the third quarter with five consecutive goals and took a 12-3 advantage with just under six minutes to play in the quarter. The Pioneers responded when
Jayson White (Salisbury, Md./Wicomico) found the back of the net off an assist from
Quinn Rundgren (Angier, N.C./Fuquay Varina). After three minutes of back and forth action, Chatham tacked on a goal with 14 seconds to play in the third quarter, and took a 13-4 lead into the final frame.
The fourth quarter started with a pair of goals from the Cougars, but Marietta answered 10 seconds later when Rundgren scored off a feed from
Daniel Blaine (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty), to make the score 15-5 in favor of Chatham with just over 11 minutes to play in the game. The teams each traded a pair of goals to close out the game as Rundgren scored his second goal of the game off an assist from Ficke. The Pioneers second goal was scored by
Zach Klein (Evergreen, Co./Evergreen) to make the score 17-7 with a minute to play in the game. Marietta fell to Chatham, 17-7.
The Pioneers were led by Ficke as he had three goals, two assists, and three ground balls. Rundgren added a pair of goals and an assist in the game. Klein and White each pitched in with a goal in the game for Marietta.
Ryan McLane (Avon, Ohio/Avon) and Chasse split time in goal for the Pioneers, the duo faced 55 shots, 34 of which were on goal, and made a combined 17 saves.
Marietta will return to action Saturday (March 16) when they host Calvin College at Don Drumm Stadium, with the game scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
