MARIETTA, Ohio – The inaugural season of Marietta College women's lacrosse began Sunday (Feb.17) when the Pioneers hosted Transylvania University on Marietta Field. Marietta was defeated by Transy 15-0, and with the win Transylvania improves to 2-1 overall and MC drops to 0-1.

Malory Brunett said, "It was a great feeling finally putting out the first ever women's lacrosse team on the field. Obviously, we would've liked to have a better result, but the team understands that this is a long process."
Transy had four different goal scorers through the first 20 minutes of the game and led, 4-0 with just over 10 minutes to play in the half. Transylvania added five more first half goals for a 9-0 halftime lead.
Transy scored a pair of goals in the opening five minutes of the second half and extended their lead to 11-0. Three more Transylvania goals gave them a 14-0 edge with 11 minutes to play in the game. After 11 minutes of scoreless action Transy scored a goal as time expired and won, 15-0.
Marietta was led by
Shelby Millheim (Bethlehem, Pa. /Freedom) as she picked up five ground balls, caused three turnovers, and won two draw controls.
Sarah Stutler (Park Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Acdemy) added four ground balls and secured a draw control. Stutler ripped the first shot in program history seven minutes into the game.
Delaney Djuric (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington) tied for a team lead in caused turnovers with three.
Freshman goalie
Maddie Leers (Crystal Lake, Ill. /Barrington) started and played the first half of the game. Leers made the first save in program history 13 minutes into the game. She finished the half with four total saves. Freshman
Sam Mooney (New Cumberland, Pa. /Red Land) took over in the second half and notched three saves. "Both of our freshman goalies made some of the first ever saves in history! For two young, freshman keepers, that is really exciting," added Coach Brunett.
"We are a young team and every game is going to mean a lot to us, win or lose. Each game is an opportunity to learn and get more experienced," concluded Coach Brunett. "We are now more experienced than we were before the game, we will grow from it."
Marietta will return to the field Saturday (Feb. 23) when they travel to take on Thiel College with the game scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
