Baldwin Wallace wins defensive battle over Marietta

BEREA, Ohio — Two big pass plays were the difference as Baldwin Wallace University downed Marietta College, 17-3, Saturday (Nov. 2) afternoon in George Finnie Stadium. The loss drops Marietta to 4-4 overall and 3-4 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Baldwin Wallace improves to 7-1 on the season and 6-1 in the OAC.

"I liked the effort our guys put out today," Marietta head coach Andy Waddle said. "Defensively, other than the two big plays, I thought we played lights out. Offensively, we just couldn't really get it going and couldn't get into our rhythm."

Baldwin Wallace struck first late in the first quarter when Keagan Armitage connected with Iyan Mitchell on a 61-yard scoring strike. Dean Sarris added the point after for a 7-0 BW lead.

Marietta got on the board in the final seconds of the half. The Pioneers drove to the BW 5-yard line. After an incomplete pass on first down, Kyle McSweeney (Independence, Ohio/Trinity) was sacked for a five-yard loss. On the play, McSweeney's helmet came off forcing him to sit out the next play.

Back-up quarterback Ethan Brown (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) overthrew Barker in the end zone on third down forcing Marietta to settle for a field goal. Jacob Griffin (Wellington, Ohio/Norwalk St. Paul) connected on the 27-yard attempt cutting the BW lead to 7-3 at halftime.

The Pioneers had the ball first in the second half and turned the ball over on downs at their own 41-yard line.

Following a 4-yard run by Shaun Perry on first down, Armitage hit Edwin Velasquez for 36 yards down to the one. Jon Murray ran it in for the touchdown and a 14-3 BW lead after Sarris added the point after.

Marietta struggled on offense the entire second half. The Pioneers had six possessions in the second half and turned the ball over on downs twice and threw three interceptions.

Tanner Clark (Caldwell, Ohio/Caldwell) was held to 68 yards rushing on 22 carries. McSweeney completed 17-of-33 passes for 184 yards. Barker had nine catches for 127 yards.

Murray rushed for 103 yards and one touchdown on 21 carries for the Yellow Jackets. Armitage completed 12-of-22 passes for 166 yards and one touchdown.

Drake Neuberger (Norwalk, Ohio/Norwalk) led the Pioneer defense with 16 tackles. He forced a fumble, recovered another and had 1.5 sacks.

Marietta returns home to host Otterbein University next Saturday (Nov. 9). Kickoff at Don Drumm Stadium is set for 1:30 p.m.
