WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Marietta College women's volleyball team was defeated by Otterbein University, 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-22) on Wednesday (Oct. 9) evening. The win pushes the Cardinals record to 15-4 overall and 1-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC), and with the loss the Pioneers fall to 11-11 overall and 0-3 in OAC play.
Otterbein jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the opening set. Marietta traded points with the Cardinals, behind a kill from
Alissa Ginther (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye), but trailed 7-4. Otterbein scored six of the next seven points and led 13-5. The Pioneers battled, but dropped the first frame 25-18.
The second set was tied at 2-2 with kills from
Sam Ritenour (Jeffersonville, Ohio/Miami Trace) and
Maris Kaiser (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy). The Cardinals scored five of the next six points and grabbed a 7-3 edge. Otterbein maintained a 17-11 lead through the middle of set. Marietta rattled of four of the next five points and cut the Cardinals lead to 18-15. The run was sparked by a pair of kills from Ritenour. Otterbein held on to win the second set, 25-17.
The Pioneers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the third set, behind a kill from Ginther. Otterbein quickly rallied to take a 6-3 edge. Marietta battled and with back to back kills by Ginther and
Brooke Trimble (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) the Pioneers cut the Cardinals advantage to 9-8. Otterbein responded to stretch its lead to 15-11. Marietta regained the lead when they scored six of the next seven points. The run was highlighted by kills from
Becca Phelps (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison Comprehensive) and Kaiser. The Cardinals responded to regain the lead, and won the final set, 25-22.
The Pioneers were led by Ritenour as she had 13 kills, and a block assist in the match. The Marietta defense was led by
April Davis (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) as she had 17 digs in the game. Trimble added to the defense as she had a game high four block assists.
Marietta will return to the court Tuesday (Oct. 15) when they host Capital University, with the game scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
