MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team was defeated by Denison University 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-20) on Thursday (Oct. 17) in Ban Johnson Arena. The win pushes the Big Red record to 15-6 overall and the loss drops the Pioneers to 12-12 on the season.
Denison jumped out to a 4-1 lead early in the first set. The Pioneers notched the first point of the game off a kill from
Brooke Trimble (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay). The Big Red maintained their lead through the middle of set, and led 14-9. The Pioneers rattled off three straight points to cut the Denison advantage to, 14-12. The run was led by kills from
Hailey Fuller (Newark, Ohio/Granville), and
Sam Ritenour (Jeffersonville, Ohio/Miami Trace). The Big Red finished the set strong and won, 25-17.
Marietta opened the second set with a 4-2 edge. The early Pioneer offense was led by kills from Trimble and Fuller. Denison answered with a 5-0 run to grab a 7-4 lead. The Big Red sustained their lead through the middle of the set, and led 21-14. Marietta cut into the lead with a quick three points behind kills from Ritenour and
April Davis (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora). The Pioneers fell in the second set, 25-20.
Marietta opened the third set strong as they led, 6-2 early. The offense was sparked by kills from Fuller and Ritenour, and a service ace from Davis. The Pioneers continued to play well and led 14-10 in the middle of the set. Denison responded to score eight of the next nine points to gain an 18-15 advantage. Marietta could not regain the lead, and dropped the final set, 25-20.
The Pioneers were led by Fuller as she tied for a game high 11 kills and 10 digs in the match. Ritenour tied her teammate with 11 kills. Davis led the defense with 16 digs, and also notched a pair of aces in the game.
Marietta will return to the court Saturday (Oct. 19) when they host Wilmington College, with the game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
