Volleyball victorious over Wooster

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team defeated the College of Wooster 3-1 (19-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-13) on Tuesday (Oct. 1) inside Ban Johnson Arena.  With the win the Pioneers improve to 11-9 overall and the Fighting Scots fall to 7-10 on the season.

The first set was a back and forth battle, as the set was tied or the lead changed hands 11 times, and remained deadlocked at 13-13.  Marietta grabbed a 16-14 edge behind kills from Alissa Ginther (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye) and Hailey Fuller (Newark, Ohio/Granville).  Wooster responded to take an 18-16 lead, and won the first set, 25-19.

The Fighting Scots jumped out to an early 9-0 edge in the second frame.  Marietta battled back through the middle of the set to tie the second frame at 16 points apiece.  The Pioneers rally was a well-rounded attack as Becca Phelps (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison Comprehensive), Sam Ritenour (Jeffersonville, Ohio/Miami Trace), and Ginther, all had multiple kills.  The second set remained tied at 23-23, before Marietta scored the final two points to win the second set, 25-23.

The Pioneers rode their second set momentum to a 7-2 edge in the third set.  The early Marietta offense was led by kills from Phelps and Ritenour.  The Pioneers were able to stretch out their lead, and put the set away with three straight points behind kills from Ginther and Maddie Nader (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) to win the set, 25-14.

Marietta opened the final frame with a 4-1 advantage with service aces from Nader and Braya Elsea (Circleville, Ohio/Logan Elm).  The Pioneers maintained their lead through the middle of the set and led, 19-12.  Marietta scored six of the final seven points to win the fourth set, 25-13.  The run was highlighted by a pair of kills from Maris Kaiser (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy).

The Pioneers were led by Phelps and Ritenour as they tied for a game high 11 kills, and Phelps added two total blocks.  Makayla Schilling (Blacklick, Ohio/Licking Heights) led the defense with 16 digs.  April Davis (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) added to the defense with 12 digs, and had four aces in the game.

Marietta will return to the court Friday (Oct. 4) when they host 15th ranked Ohio Northern, with the game scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
