UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Marietta College women's basketball team was in action Saturday (Jan. 26) as they traveled to the DeCarlo Varsity Center to battle John Carroll University. The Pioneers were defeated by the Blue Streaks 80-59. With the win John Carroll improves to 14-5 overall and 10-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) and with the loss Marietta falls to 11-8 overall and 6-6 in OAC action.

The Blue Streaks opened the first quarter quickly as they held an 8-3 edge two minutes into the game. The Pioneer points were scored by
Bailee Brooks (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls) and
Alexis Enochs (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye). After John Carroll extended its lead to 16-7, Marietta answered with an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 16-15. The run was highlighted by back to back three pointers from
Shay Lett (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe). The teams battled for the remainder of the quarter, and entered the second quarter deadlocked at 20 points apiece.
The second quarter started as the teams traded baskets, and the Blue Streaks held a 28-27 lead at the 6:27 mark of the second quarter. The Pioneers buckets were scored by
Marlo Taylor (Kimbolton, Ohio/Cambridge) and
Corrie Burkhardt (Zanesville, Ohio/Philo). John Carroll was able to open an 11-2 run that stretched its lead to 39-28 with under a minute to play in the half. A pair of Brooks foul shots with 21 seconds to play in the half cut the Blue Streaks lead to 39-30 at the intermission.
In the third quarter, Marietta was able to cut the John Carroll lead to seven points a couple of times as Taylor hit a pair of foul shots and Lett knocked down a three pointer. The Blue Streaks were able to extend a 60-42 edge behind a 10-0 run, that ended when Enochs converted a layup. John Carroll continued to play well and entered the fourth quarter ahead, 60-49.
The Blue Streaks begun the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run that extended their lead to 69-49, which forced a Pioneers timeout at the 6:42 mark of the final frame. Marietta battled for the remainder of the game but fell, 80-59.
The Pioneers were led by Lett as she scored 14 points, on 57 percent shooting from behind the arc, and had five assists. Enochs notched 10 points, and had a block and a steal in the game. Taylor added nine points, pulled down three boards, and had two blocks.
Marietta will return to the hardwood Wednesday (Jan. 30) when they host Capital University, with tip scheduled for 7 p.m.
