ALTOONA, Pa. — The Marietta College men's tennis team defeated Penn State Altoona by the score of 6-3 Friday (Sept. 28) afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 1-2 on the season, Penn State falls to 0-1 overall.
The Lions got off to a good start winning the top two doubles matches for the early 2-1 lead. At No. 1, Jake Colledge and Jonathan D'Arcy downed
Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and
Jack Hirschfield (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta), 8-5.
Eric DeLong (Lowell, Ohio/Marietta) and
Bryce Emerick (Hyndman, Pa./HOPE for Hyndman Charter) fell to Logan Kyle and Andrew Ung at No. 2 by the score of 9-8.
Marietta got on the board when its No. 3 duo of
Will Watson (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) and
Hanyang Zhang () posted an 8-3 win over Tyler Smolko and Christopher Pridgen.
The Pioneers the match at 3-3, with two quick wins at Nos. 5 and 4 singles. Watson blanked Pridgen at No. 5, 6-0 and 6-0, while Zhang defeated Ung at No. 4, 6-3 and 6-0.
Colledge gave Penn State its final point of the afternoon with a victory at No. 1 against Spencer, 6-4 and 6-2.
DeLong and Emerick posted straight-set wins to secure the team victory for the Pioneers. At No. 3, DeLong topped Kyle, 6-4 and 6-0. Emerick beat Smolko at No. 6, 6-2 and 6-4.
In the final match of the day, Hirschfield took down D'Arcy in three sets at No. 2. Hirschfield took the first set, 6-2, before losing the second, 3-6. Hirschfield won the deciding set by the score of 10-6 for the victory.
Marietta plays at Washington and Jefferson College on Saturday (Sept. 29) at 10 a.m.
