Volleyball splits at Carnegie Mellon Invitational

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Marietta College volleyball team was in action as they competed in the Carnegie Mellon Invitational.  

The Pioneers defeated Elizabethtown College, 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-16).  Marietta was defeated by Carnegie Mellon, 3-0 (25- 16, 25-16, 25-19) in their second match of the night.  

The first match started with Marietta scoring the first three points of the match, behind a kill from Alissa Ginther (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye).  Elizabethtown responded to tie the game at 17 points apiece.  The game remained tied at 20-20 before the Pioneers rattled off a 5-1 run to win the first set 25-21.  The run was led by kills from Brooke Trimble (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) and Ginther.  

The second set started as a back and forth battle as the set was tied five separate times, and remained deadlocked at six points apiece.  The Pioneers rattled off four straight points to take a 10-6 edge behind a pair of service aces from Sam Ritenour (Jeffersonville, Ohio/Miami Trace).  The Pioneers maintained their edge, and won the second set, 25-19.

Elizabethtown jumped out to a 3-1 edge in the third set, but the Pioneers responded with a 6-1 run to take a 7-4 advantage.  The run was sparked by kills from Amanda Arrowood (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Groveport Madison), and Trimble.  Marietta stretched their lead to 18-11 behind kills from Maris Kaiser (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy), and Ginther.  The Pioneers won the third set, 25-16.  

In the second match of the night Carnegie Mellon jumped out to an early 10-4 edge in the opening set.  Marietta battled for the remainder of the set, but fell 25-16.  

The second set saw Carnegie Mellon grab an early 3-1 edge.  Carnegie Mellon led the entire second set, and won 25-16.  

Carnegie Mellon rode their momentum, and won the final frame 25-19.  

The Pioneers were led by, Ginther as she had 20 kills combined in the two games, including a game high 11 kills against Elizabethtown.  Hunter Barnes (Duncan Falls, Ohio/Philo) added 15 kills and one block assist in the two matches.  

Defensively, the Pioneers were led by April Davis (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) as she had 21 digs between the two matches, including a game high 12 digs against Elizabethtown.  Ellie Gerber (New Philadelphia, Ohio/New Philadelphia) added 27 assists combined in the two matches, including a game high 18 assists against Elizabethtown.  

Marietta will return to the court Saturday (Sep. 22) when they finish their competition in the Carnegie Mellon Invitational.
