BEAVER FALLS, Pa. — Marietta College fell to Geneva College by the score of 6-3 Saturday (Sept. 15) afternoon in men's tennis action. The Pioneers fall to 0-1 on the season, while Geneva is 1-1 overall.
Geneva jumped out to a 3-0 lead after sweeping the doubles play. At No. 1, Alex Beck and Nate Heidengren beat
Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and
Jack Hirschfield (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta), 8-6.
Will Watson (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) and
Eric DeLong (Lowell, Ohio/Marietta) lost to Eric Abbott and Alex Greissinger at No. 2, 8-4, while Drake Greenstein and Jesse Claudio were 8-5 winners at No. 3 over
Hanyang Zhang () and
Bryce Emerick (Hyndman, Pa./HOPE for Hyndman Charter).
Hirschfield, DeLong and Emerick all posted straight-set wins in their singles matches accounting for Marietta's three team points. Hirschfield beat Heidengren at No. 2, 6-4 and 6-3. DeLong downed Greissinger at No. 5, 6-3 and 6-4, while Emerick was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Josiah Shaver at No. 6.
In the top spot, Beck beat Spencer, 6-0 and 6-3. Greenstein defeated Zhang at No. 3, 6-2 and 6-4. Abbot posted a 7-5, 6-2 win over Watson at No. 4.
Marietta is back in action on Sunday (Sept. 16) with a 2:30 p.m. match at Mount Aloysius College.
