CLEVELAND, Ohio — Marietta College opened the 2018 season with a 3-0 loss at case Western Reserve University Friday (August 31) evening in men's soccer action.
Case punched in a pair of first half goals and then held off the Pioneer attack in the final 45 minutes for the victory. Maximillian Klemm scored off a corner kick in the 37th and then Garrett Winter tallied an unassisted goal in the 38th minute.
"Case is a very good team and we knew that going in. So, to give them two soft goals is making it nearly impossible to come back from," Marietta head coach
Joe Bergin said. "The second half was significantly better but the damage was done in the first half. We need to be ready for Sunday as Wittenberg presents a unique set of challenges as well."
Marietta went on the offensive in the second half recording six of their seven shots on the night. Case keeper Charlie Fink finished with three saves and the clean sheet.
The Spartans put the game away with an unassisted goal from Alex Best in the 72nd minute.
Trevor Dykstra (Jamestown, N.Y./Falconer Central) went the distance in goal for the Pioneers. He notched three saves.
For the match, Case Western held a 12-7 advantage in shots, including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. The Pioneers took five corners to just three for Case.
Marietta travels to Wittenberg University on Sunday (Sept. 2) for a 2:30 p.m. match. The Tigers lost their season-opener to Adrian, 2-1, Friday evening.
