Game Recap: Softball |

Softball falls twice on final day of Emory & Henry Invitational

EMORY, Virginia — The Marietta College softball team lost twice on Sunday (Mar. 4) afternoon in the Emory & Henry Invitational. Susquehanna downed the Pioneers 7-4 in the first game, while Emory & Henry was an 8-5 winner in the second game.

Marietta falls to 0-4 on the young season. Susquehanna improves to 1-2 overall and Emory & Henry finishes the weekend 8-2 overall.

After falling behind Susquehanna 3-0, Marietta scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead. Mackenzie Marshall (Sardis, Ohio/River) reached on a two-out double and scored when Erin Miller (Woodsfield, Ohio/Monroe Central) followed with a single down the left field line. Miller went to second on the throw.

Alyssa Cook (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) walked and Kaitlyn Carpenter pinch ran for Miller at second base. A single up the middle from Britnee Kail loaded the bases. Lindsey Gortner then singled to left driving in Carpenter. Following a pitching change, Ali Prologo (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) hit a grounder to the third baseman who threw the ball away at first. Kail and Cook scored on the play.

The MC lead was short-lived as Susquehanna scored four runs in the top of the seventh. Aided by a Marietta error, three of the runs were unearned.

Hannah Richardson started in the circle for the Pioneers and threw 3.1 innings. She gave up three runs, two earned, on six hits. Richardson walked one and struck out one.

Maddi Liston (0-2) was charged with the loss. Liston worked 3.1 innings and allowed four runs, one earned, on seven hits. She struck out one. Jackie Mulvain pitched 0.1 inning and allowed one base hit.

It was a similar story against Emory & Henry in the nitecap. The Wasps jumped out to an early 5-0 lead with one run in the first and four more in the third. Courtney Herron delivered the big blow with a two-run single in the third.

Marietta battled back with a run in the bottom of the third and four in the fourth to even the score at 5-5. Kayla Alderson smacked her first career home run in the third inning, a solo shot over the left field fence.

Alderson delivered again in the fourth with a three-run homer to left-center. Jordan Pallay walked to lead off the inning and Maicy Kirk (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) reached on a single before Alderson cleared the bases.

Prologo and Kail worked walks and Miller was hit by a pitch to reload the bases. Marshall pinch hit and got beaned forcing in Prologo with the tying run. E&H got of the inning with a strikeout.

The Wasps struck right back in the top of the fifth inning. Kendall Varner and Caley Hodge singled to start the inning and then Leah Elswick cleared the bases with a three-run shot to left center for an 8-5 lead.

Liston (0-3) started and took the loss. She threw 4.0 innings and gave up eight runs, seven earned, on seven hits. Liston walked three and struck out four. Ashley Tschudy pitched 2.0 shutout innings allowing four base hits, while Mulvain threw 1.0 inning and struck out one.
