Women's Basketball sets program record for wins with 74-51 victory over Muskingum

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's basketball team gave itself a nice Valentine's Day gift as the Pioneers crushed rival Muskingum University, 74-51, to set the program's single season wins record Wednesday (Feb. 14) evening in Ban Johnson Arena.

The Pioneers improve to 21-3 overall and are tied with Ohio Northern for first place in the Ohio Athletic Conference with a 14-3 record. Marietta and Ohio Northern face off for the OAC title in Ban Johnson Saturday (Feb. 17) at 3 p.m. in the regular season finale. Muskingum falls to 6-18 overall and 2-15 in conference games.

"It was great to be able to set the program record for most wins in a season at home," Marietta head coach Kole Vivian said. "Our community is like no other with their support and to be able to do it in front of them was a special moment for our team."

Shay Lett (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) was the only player to reach double figures in the game finishing with 10 points. Jenna Andersen (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington), Brooke Borich (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye) and Corrie Burkhardt (Zanesville, Ohio/Philo) each scored eight points for the Pioneers. Amisha Herd (Zanesville, Ohio/West Muskingum) added seven points and 10 assists, while Laura Pullins (Long Bottom, Ohio/Reedsville Eastern) chipped in with seven points.

Alexandra Carson led the Muskies with eight points. Olivia Besancon and Stephanie Clark both posted six points and five rebounds.

An early three-pointer from Caitlyn Smith gave Muskingum its only lead of the night. Marietta used a 14-0 run in the first quarter to take control of the game and never looked back.

The Pioneers led 22-1 after the first quarter and then limited Muskingum to just four points in the second period. Marietta took a commanding 43-15 advantage into halftime.

A jumper from Borich late in the third quarter gave the Pioneers their biggest lead of the night, 64-26. With the game in hand, Vivian was able to play his entire roster in the fourth quarter.

For the game, Marietta shot 46.9% (30-of-64) from the floor, 33.3% (6-of-18) from three-point range and 47.1% (8-of-17) at the free throw line. The Muskies were 18-of-59 (30.5%) from the floor, 6-of-18 (33.3%) behind the arc and 9-of-14 (64.3%) at the line.

Muskingum outrebounded the Pioneers, 44-38. The Muskies turned the ball over 21 times, while Marietta committed 14 turnovers.

Marietta closes out the regular season at Ohio Northern University on Saturday (Feb. 17). Tip off is set for 3 p.m.
