Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball defeated by #9 Trine

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's basketball team was in action Sunday (Nov. 25) afternoon as they hosted ninth ranked Trine University in the championship game of the 34th Annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot sponsored by BSN Sports.  The Pioneers were defeated by the Thunder 64-43.

Corrie Burkhardt (Zanesville, Ohio/Philo) and Alexis Enochs (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye) were each named to the all-tournament team for the Pioneers.  The Thunder had Brandi Dawson named to the all-tournament team and Cassidy Williams was named tournament MVP.

Head Coach Kole Vivian said, "Trine is really good, and we wanted to play them to see what we needed to work on and fix."

The Thunder opened the game on a 7-0 run that spanned the first five minutes of the game.  The Pioneers halted the run when Luce Duritza (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler Area) converted a layup off a nice entry pass from Shay Lett (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe).  Marietta battled for the remainder of the opening quarter and entered the second frame behind, 11-6.

The second quarter saw the teams trade baskets for the opening three minutes, as Marlo Taylor (Kimbolton, Ohio/Cambridge), and Burkhardt scored for Marietta.  A quick 6-0 run by Trine stretched their lead to 20-10 before Lett knocked down a three pointer to halt the run with five minutes remaining in the half.  The Thunder ended the half strong, and the Pioneers entered the intermission behind, 33-21.

The second half opened as the teams traded baskets for the first four minutes, and the Thunder still led, 42-28.  The Pioneers cut into the Trine lead when Taylor knocked down a three pointer off an assist from Bailee Brooks (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls).  After the Taylor three, Trine went on an 8-0 run and took a 50-31 edge to force a Marietta timeout.  The Thunder entered the final quarter ahead, 52-33.

The fourth quarter was a defensive battle as Trine outscored the Pioneers 12-10.  Marietta battled but fell, 64-43.

The Pioneers were led by Burkhardt as she had 12 points, three steals, and a pair of assists.  Taylor led Marietta in rebounds as she grabbed 10, and pitched in with eight points.  Duritza provided a spark off the bench as she notched six points, five rebounds, and a block in her 14 minutes of play.

Marietta will return to the court Wednesday (Nov. 28) when they host Otterbein University to open Ohio Athletic Conference play, with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m.
