Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Pioneers victorious over Washington and Jefferson

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Marietta College women's basketball team was in action Saturday (Nov. 17) as they were victorious over Washington and Jefferson College, 76-63 in the championship game of the Washington and Jefferson Tip-off Tournament.  With the win the Pioneers improve to 2-0 on the season.

Alexis Enochs (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye) was named Washington and Jefferson Tip-off Tournament MVP and Shay Lett (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) was named All-Tournament Team for Marietta.

Head Coach Kole Vivian said, "This was a real quality win on the road against a team I think is going to win 20 plus games this season."

The first quarter started as a back and forth battle as the game was tied at 4-4 three minutes into the game.  The Pioneers went on a quick 9-0 run that saw them grab a 13-4 edge with just under six minutes to play in the opening quarter.  The run was led by Lett as she knocked down a pair of three pointers off assists from Enochs and Bailee Brooks (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls).  After a pair of foul shots from the Presidents, Lett knocked down her third three pointer of the opening frame and gave Marietta a 16-6 lead half way through the quarter.  The Pioneers maintained their advantage for the remainder of the frame to enter the second quarter ahead, 29-18.

Washington and Jefferson scored the first point of the second quarter before Marietta rattled off a 14-0 run that spanned seven minutes and gave the Pioneers a 44-19 lead.  Luce Duritza (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler Area) propelled the Pioneers as she scored seven of the 14 points during the run.  Marietta finished the half strong and led, 51-25 at the intermission.

The third quarter opened as a back and forth battle as the Pioneers maintained a 60-39 edge midway through the third quarter.  The Presidents opened up a quick 7-0 run that the cut the Marietta lead to 62-46 with just under three minutes remaining in the third quarter.  The run was halted by a layup and converted foul shot from Brooks.  The Pioneers entered the fourth quarter ahead, 65-50.

The fourth quarter opened as a hard fought battle, as Marietta was able to maintain a 68-57 advantage with just over six minutes remaining in the game.  The Pioneers answered with a quick 4-0 run as Jo Herd-Middlebrooks (Columbus, Ohio/DeSales) and Brooks each made a layup, to give Marietta a 15 point edge.  The Pioneers held their double-digit margin for the remainder of the game and won, 76-63.

Marietta was led by Brooks as she led all scorers with 21 points.  The 21 points for Brooks is a career high.  Enochs added 16 points, and five rebounds in the game for the Pioneers.  Lett pitched in with 14 points, and a career high in assist with seven.  Corrie Burkhardt (Zanesville, Ohio/Philo) led the Pioneers in rebounds with seven.

"Our bench was unbelievable giving us a lift with a few starters in foul trouble.  It feels great to be heading into the Turkey Shoot with a couple of road wins in our pocket", concluded Coach Vivian.

Marietta will return to the court Saturday (Nov. 24) when they host Hiram College in the 34th annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot.
